Symphony, Galmont Ballet Combine for ‘Russian Festival’
October 2nd concert free for students 18 and under
(Merritt Island, FL) September 21, 2010 – Only two short weeks after their 2010-11 Season opener, the 80-piece Space Coast Symphony will present “A Russian Festival” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 2nd at the First Baptist Church, 140 Magnolia Avenue in Merritt Island. Conductor Aaron Collins and the non-profit orchestra will explore the powerful music of Russian composers, Piotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Prokofiev. Tchaikovsky's genius will be celebrated with the soaring Slavonic March as well as a special audience treat: Eight dancers from the Galmont Ballet will join the SCSO onstage in a “dance fantasy” to Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite. The role of Princess Aurora will be danced by Daliana Gutierrez. Symphony number 5 by Sergei Prokofiev will be performed in the second half of the program; music Prokofiev called "glorifying the human spirit." The powerful symphony communicates the emotional tensions of war. $10 advance tickets may be purchased online at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org, at the offices of Blue Sky Insurance in Cocoa Village and Tropical Realty of Suntree, or by calling (321) 536-8580. Tickets purchased at the door will be $15; students 18 and under admitted free.
With barely a breath between programs, the Space Coast Symphony and Conductor Aaron Collins are gearing up for a concert-filled year. “A Russian Festival” marks the second of eight subscription concerts planned for September 2010 through March 2011, but the ambitious conductor also plans dozens of ensemble performances throughout Brevard with various musicians from the orchestra. Collins is more than ready for it.
“Our second Season is off and running,” said the 28-year old composer and conductor, “and each concert gets better and better. We are delighted to have the Galmont Ballet dancing to Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite and hope that a lot of people will come out to see and hear it,” adding, “Really, does it get any better than ballet and Tchaikovsky?”
