Co-Founder Denny Kolsch expressed his feelings about the first year of Brick & Mortar in Cocoa Village.

“At the heart of it, we exist to build up our community,” said Kolsch. “We’ve seen our efforts spark something among artists this first year, and in the months ahead we want to broaden our scope and provide more opportunities through a relationship with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. We hope collaboration will provide a larger community expression.”

Space Coast Symphony Orchestra conductor Aaron Collins is also positive.

"Brick & Mortar is a cutting edge art cooperative and I believe they will do exciting things for the Arts here in Brevard County.  Apart from sharing office space, Brick & Mortar and the SCSO are a good artistic fit, with great ideas for future collaborative events."

Brick & Mortar is expanding its current role as exhibit curator for local and national artists, to include photography classes, artist round table discussions and workshops, a lecture series and more opportunities for public participation in art projects.  For more, call (321) 252-9333 or visit www.BrickandMortarBuilt.com.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION— “Endless Summer: The Warmth of Nostalgia,” is an exhibition of photography, film, and mixed media opening Friday, September 2, 2011 at 8 pm in Cocoa Village. The month-long exhibition features Florida photographers Stephen Wilson and Rich Sullivan, videographer Dustin Miller, artist Ty Williams, and the craftsmanship of local surfboard shapers Ricky Carroll and Larry Mayo.  Through a variety of mediums, the exhibition explores the zeitgeist of summer and its iconic grasp on Florida’s coast. The work of Wilson, Miller, Williams, and Sullivan present visual meanderings of the seasonal landscape with saturated themes of nostalgia. The mixed media show will also explore the spaces, places and activities we associate with the golden season. Notable surfboard shapers Ricky Carroll and Larry Mayo will also display a variety of vintage and custom boards.

ABOUT BRICK & MORTAR—  Brick & Mortar curates art exhibitions and events to engage our local community. We hope to create an environment where the exchange of ideas and dialogue can take place. We want our events and art projects to create relationships, give people the freedom to explore artistic expression, and to see a sustainable creative community emerge. The name Brick & Mortar is actually a business term for a physical and tangible space, as opposed to say an online store. When naming this community project, we saw the need and value to have a real presence. The name Brick & Mortar also reminds us of the power and purpose for living connected. It all came together when we found a home in Historic Cocoa Village.  Brick & Mortar is located at 643 Brevard Avenue Cocoa, FL 32922.  For more information, please visit http://brickandmortarbuilt.com

ABOUT THE SPACE COAST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA— The SCSO is a lively and passionate Central Florida orchestra comprised of professional musicians and select youth players.  The Orchestra was formed with a two-fold mission: to provide mentoring and performance opportunities for Florida’s finest youth musicians as well as to provide professional-level concerts at genuinely affordable prices.  The ultimate goal of the organization is to help ensure the symphonic tradition for the enjoyment of future generations.

The symphony performs in several very comfortable venues in Brevard and Indian River counties, with advance general admission tickets priced at just $20.  School-aged children 18 years and under are admitted free of charge.  In keeping with their mission, the symphony launched the Symphony for Everyone program in 2011, designed to provide substantially discounted admission tickets to any Space Coast Symphony concert.

Relying on a non-traditional orchestra model and a slim budget, the non-profit group performs year-round in addition to providing separate and free ensemble performances. More information about the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming concerts, ticket sales, venues, directions and sponsorship opportunities is available at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org by calling (321) 536-8580.
