Space Coast Symphony presents blockbusters by Sibelius, Smetana and Tchaikovsky
(Merritt Island, FL) February 1, 2011 – The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra presents “The Power of Music,” the sixth concert of its 2010-2011 Season at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 12th at the First Baptist Church, 140 Magnolia Avenue in Merritt Island. Conductor Aaron Collins will lead the 80-piece orchestra in three blockbuster works by Sibelius, Smetana, and Tchaikovsky. The sixty-voice Space Coast Chorus joins the SCSO to open the concert with the rousing Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, whose music captures the essence of the Finnish spirit. Smetana’s richly orchestrated portrait of a river, The Moldau, rounds out the first half of the program. The concert closes with Tchaikovsky’s tumultuous Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, composed during personal hardship. $10 tickets may be reserved or purchased in advance online at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org, at the offices of Blue Sky Insurance in Cocoa Village and Tropical Realty of Suntree, or by calling (321) 536-8580. Tickets purchased at the door will be $15; under 18 years of age admitted free.
The Space Coast Symphony’s young conductor, Aaron Collins, knows this concert is a musical power play.
"The Power of Music features iconic works,” said Collins. “Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony is an emotional rollercoaster which pushes the orchestra to the extremes. In addition, we are adding another dimension to the audience experience by including the sixty-piece Space Coast Chorus in a performance of Sibelius' powerful Finlandia."
Close on the heels of the triumphant “Mendelssohn Goes Italian”, this concert marks the sixth of eight subscription events planned through March 2011. The ambitious conductor also plans dozens of ensemble performances throughout Brevard with various musicians from the orchestra.
