Mendelssohn & Dvorak: String Quartets
Free Concert
May 29, 2011 I 3:00 PM I Riverside Presbyterian Church, Cocoa Beach
During his stay in America, Antonin Dvorak composed works whose themes were drawn from Native American and African American music. The New World Symphony and the “American” Quartet inspired homegrown composers to find a uniquely American style and sound. For this concert, Michael De Jesus, Joshua Dampier, Juan Carlos Siviero, and Paul Fleury explore the works of Dvorak & Mendelssohn. The first half of the concert features Mendelssohn’s E Minor quartet, which highlights the many hallmarks of Mendelssohn’s style: passionate and high energy phrases, skittering “elfin” scherzi, soaring song-like lines, and vigorous rhythms. Experience the precision and passion in a program of two loved works of the string quartet canon.

The idea of transfiguration loomed large for late romantic artists, and Verklärte Nacht “Transfigured Night” – although the product of a composer who was just 25 years old – seems to sum up a whole lifetime’s experience in music that is among the most luscious ever composed. Arnold Schoenberg’s masterpiece for strings tells of a transfigured night in which a couple fall in love all over again. This haunting masterwork will take your breath away. The second half features a performance of Piotr Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, a work which has all the hallmarks of his style: Passion, Ecstasy, Colour, Tragedy, and Joy. Based on the composer’s sojourn in Tuscany; it is every bit as wonderful as his more famous String Serenade.
