‘London Symphony’ a Multi-media Experience

‘London Symphony’ a Multi-media Experience
Space Coast Symphony presents Vaughan Williams’ epic classic paired with film

(Cocoa Village, FL) October 11, 2011 - Aaron Collins and the Space Coast Symphony take a musical trip “across the pond” when they present “A London Symphony” on Saturday, October 22nd at 7:00 PM at the Scott Center for the Performing Arts at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in north Melbourne.  The Scott Center auditorium is located off the Pineda Causeway at 5625 Holy Trinity Drive, 32940.  The concert opens with Wasps Overture by Vaughan Williams, a work scored for a Cambridge production of the Greek play by Aristophanes.  The Space Coast Symphony’s principal second violinist, Carey Moorman, will give the Southeastern U.S. premiere performance of Cecil Forsyth’s Viola Concerto in G minor, a work of extraordinary lyricism and powerful melodies. The concert concludes with Vaughan Williams’ A London Symphony, an affectionate and sometimes elegiac musical portrait of London and its inhabitants in the era that vanished with World War I.  Local filmmaker, Jeff Thompson has assembled archival film footage and period photos to accompany Williams’ moving symphony. $20 advance tickets may be purchased online at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or by calling (321) 536-8580.  Convenient ticket outlets include A Floral Affair in Merritt Island, Art Expressions in Eau Gallie, Blue Sky Insurance in Cocoa Village and Tropical Realty of Suntree.  Tickets at the door are an additional $5.  Students 18 years of age and under admitted free.  And for those unable to afford the price of general admission, the new SCSO Symphony for Everyone program will provide discounted tickets to anyone wishing to attend the symphony performance.  See details at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org.

Artistic Director Aaron Collins is a passionate believer in the use of multi-media to enhance the concert-going experience, providing the music is preserved as the main event.

“This is not an attempt to decorate or distract from the music,” said Collins. “Rather, we wanted to show the audience the London of the time that inspired Vaughan Williams to write his impressive symphony.  Their experience will include the excitement of a live musical performance coupled with emotional imagery from an era that has passed.  The energy of the audience itself is the third component that will make this a truly remarkable event.”

“A London Symphony” is the third concert of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s recently announced 2011-12 Season; a hugely ambitious and wide-ranging collection of 16 concerts featuring great works from classical and contemporary genres, orchestral masterworks, guest artists from far and near and collaborations with local Performing Arts organizations.  Known for their exuberant playing style and innovative concerts, the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will challenge audiences in 2011-12 to 'Be Inspired' with a vastly diversified musical offering and flexible ticket pricing.  Concert details are online at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org, with Season tickets, Flex Ticket packs and individual advance tickets now available for purchase.

ABOUT THE SPACE COAST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA— The SCSO is a lively and passionate Central Florida orchestra comprised of professional musicians and select youth players.  The Orchestra was formed with a two-fold mission: to provide mentoring and performance opportunities for Florida’s finest youth musicians as well as to provide professional-level concerts at genuinely affordable prices.  The ultimate goal of the organization is to help ensure the symphonic tradition for the enjoyment of future generations.

The symphony performs in several very comfortable venues in Brevard and Indian River counties, with advance general admission tickets priced at just $20.  School-aged children 18 years and under are admitted free of charge.  In keeping with their mission, the symphony launched the Symphony for Everyone program in 2011, designed to provide substantially discounted admission tickets to any Space Coast Symphony concert.

Relying on a non-traditional orchestra model and a slim budget, the non-profit group performs year-round in addition to providing separate and free ensemble performances.
